Volunteer for the 2017 Wings of Freedom Tour

The Torrance Airport Association needs volunteers to support the Collings Foundation Visit.  To learn more about volunteer needs, or to volunteer, click here.

The Foundation is a non-profit organization with a goal to preserve history with transportation-related events.  The “Wings of Freedom Tour” features restored B-24 and B-17 bombers and a P-51C Mustang fighter.

JOB DESCRIPTIONS


SET-UP

LEAD:
LOCATION: Airport Ramp, GAC, Museum alley
EQUIPMENT PROVIDED: Vest, whistle, water, zip ties, ropes, stanchions, cones, tables, chairs, wastebaskets, etc

  • Set up barricades along white line, north side of apron (22 total, every 20 feet)
  • Set up stanchions along east, west, south sides of aircraft parking area (every 15 feet)
  • Set up stanchions by Pacific Aero hangar , string tape
  • String rope through stanchions; string the tape along the south side and by Pacific Aero
  • coil and zip-tie all tie-down ropes between taxiways E and F. Those on north edge of apron need not be tied
  • Direct delivery of portable toilets into area near tower (see diagram)
  • Stack cones (approx 40) along north edge of parking area to cover tie downs in ground tour area
  • Place trash cans along south edge of parking area

PARKING

LEAD:
LOCATION: Parking lot entrances
EQUIPMENT PROVIDED: Vest, whistle, water

  • GAC Lot: Only permit vehicles displaying a HANDICAPPED placard.
  • Tower Gate: Only allow vehicles to enter if it displays a VOLUNTEER PARKING PERMIT, or The driver’s name is on the volunteer list.
  • All Other Lots: When spaces are available, display the “EVENT PARKING” sign. Direct arrivals to vacant spaces. When lot is filled, display the “LOT FULL” sign.

 


GREETER

LEAD:
LOCATION: Event entrances (museum, GAC, near control tower)
EQUIPMENT PROVIDED: Vest, whistle, water, “I Love Torrance Aiport” brochures

  • Direct event visitors.
  • Be sure prohibited items (Bicycles, roller skates, scooters, alcohol, etc) are not brought into venue.
  • Hand out brochures as visitors leave.

 


GROUND TOUR GUIDE

LEAD:
LOCATION: Airport ramp
Aircraft Arrival:

  • Make sure the aircraft parking area is clear of all non-essential personnel
  • Move stanchions and ropes so that aircraft can enter the parking area
  • After the aircraft shut down, replace the stanchions and ropes to enclose the parking area
  • Place cones over all the downs in the parking area

Ground Tour Activities:

  • Direct all visitors to the aircraft parking area to enter through the entrance with the Collings ticket booth
  • Prevent any visitors from climbing on any of the aircraft
  • Prevent visitors from exiting to other parts of the airport

Aircraft Departure:

  • Make sure the aircraft parking area is clear of all non-essential personnel
  • Remove the cones from the tie-downs in the parking area
  • Move stanchions and ropes so that aircraft can depart the parking area
  • After the aircraft taxi from the parking area, replace the stanchions and ropes.

 

TEAR-DOWN

LEAD:
LOCATION: Airport ramp, GAC, Museum alley
EQUIPMENT PROVIDED: Vest, whistle, water, side cutters

  • Disassemble & stack barricades for Ops Staff
  • Remove & coil stanchion ropes–move to storage; tape is expendable
  • Stack stanchions–move to storage
  • Stack cones–move to storage
  • Empty & stack trash cans
