Costa (Gus) Kokkinos passed away on July 14th, 2021, at the age of 91.
Gus survived both the Italian and German occupations of his hometown of Kastoria, Greece, during WWII. He came to the US as a foreign exchange student studying at the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute (BPI). His studies were interrupted when he served in the US Army during the Korean War, during which he was wounded in combat and awarded a Purple Heart. After receiving an honorable discharge (and a US citizenship), he completed his bachelor’s degree at BPI.
He worked at TRW in Dr. Don Jortner’s Hardness & Survivability(H&S) Laboratory. He supported a number of critical DOD space programs, but was particularly remembered for leading the hardening/survivability of the Defense Support Program (DSP) satellite system. Gus retired in 1992 after 26 years of outstanding service to TRW. He enjoyed having lunch occasionally with the H&S “family” and talking about old times. We will miss him.
