Orvis E. Adams,96, passed away in early February, 2022. He was originally from Bethelridge, Kentucky. Upon graduating from high school, he served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and participated in Navy “Black Cat” airstrikes on the Japanese Kuril Islands as a radioman-gunner on PBY-5 aircraft.
He obtained his engineering degree from MIT via the Navy’s OCS program. After leaving the Navy, he worked at Philco and Bosch Arma before joining TRW in 1965. During his 25 years at TRW he worked on the Lunar Lander guidance system, was Program Manager on the E-4B Advanced Command Post nuclear hardening program, and was the Electronics Systems and Technology Department Manager in the Hardness & Survivability Laboratory headed by Dr. Don Jortner. Orv retired in 1990, but maintained a close personal relationship with the Hardness & Survivability (H&S) people. He celebrated his 93rd birthday with key H&S folks at a Katella Restaurant luncheon.
Orv will be remembered as a friendly Southern gentleman who contributed much to successful TRW programs, mentoring of young engineers, and for his gallant service to our country during WWII.
