Thanks for posting your comment, Barbara. We in the TRA have no inside information about the answer to your question. If your friend is still an employee, I wonder if it’s possible that the difference is caused by the company subsidizing his health premiums more than they have chosen to for retirees.
I, too, was surprised at the increase in our net premiums. It has lead us to look at switching from the Premium to the Value plan. The description wasn’t very clear, but I think the difference is a much higher deductible for out-of-network care in the Value plan, but much lower monthly premiums.That was a very nice benefit, but I’m not aware of any opportunity for retirees to take advantage of that. We’ve tried to get HR to negotiate retirees into their discount agreements, but haven’t had much luck so far.
Did you watch the show on Science Channel called Telescope? It features a number of our NG teammates talking about JWST, which is currently being assembled at Space Park and NASA Goddard. Final assembly will be here. At some point, we should see if we can get a TRA tour!

Watch the JWST Telescope get assembled in the NASA Goddard clean room. The Telescope structure was assembled in the NG high bay and shipped to Goddard in Greenbelt, MD, where the beryllium mirror segments are being mounted to the structure. Watch this happen on the live webcam.
